I first realized that I was fat back in high school. I may as well have been fat before then, but I just didn’t care, and high school has a funny way of suddenly making you care about the way you look.

I was with a group of the guys and a particular cheerleader one sunny afternoon, when she decided (and don’t ask me why) to go around the group and point out the physical characteristics that she admired about us. It went a little something like this:

“Tommy has the best eyes – I love them. Dan, well Dan’s arms are just sooo ripped, like a bodybuilder. Chris is the swimmer, so he no doubt has the sexiest abs. And Obi, well… [a pause that seemed like eternity]…Obi has the best personality.” She could have stabbed my testicles with an ice pick and it would have hurt less. So at a very young age I realized that my appearance (read: how fat I was) affected not only how I felt physically, but how other people perceived me as well.

So I went searching the Internet for a book, or guide, or expert that could help rid me of my fat problem.

I ordered diet pills that claimed to be “exercise in a bottle” that would do all the work for me. I bought e-books that claimed to know “the truth about 6-pack abs”. I ordered hourly phone sessions with so-called “fitness experts”.

But NONE of them worked!

Problem #1: The information was being given by someone who had no right to be telling other people what to do with their bodies. Have you ever heard the quote “Never trust a skinny cook”? Well the same goes for doctors with potbellies or double-chins. I just couldn’t trust the information.

Problem #2: The product had all the right packaging with the sexy people and their ripped abs, but inside, all they offered were pages and pages of exercises. Lift your leg this way 100 times, crunch like this, do this many sit-ups every morning, run 5 miles on an empty stomach…etc. I tuckered myself out doing endless variations of exercises, and I didn’t lose the weight I should have lost for all the work I put in. I was still fat! I was in better shape, yes, but you sure couldn’t tell!

Problem #3: The magic pills weren’t so magical. Buying the pills was always the most exciting. Their sales letters would mention how easy it is to burn fat with so and so pill. The idea of going to sleep and waking up better looking was an exciting thing. The only problem was that these “magic pills” came with mandatory exercise books that looked all too familiar and just like what I’d seen before. Lift your leg this way 100 times, crunch like this, do this many sit-ups…and take our pill too. I realized that there was no magic in the pill, and there was nothing new in the information they were giving me.

There had to be a better way.

Somewhere along the line I was in a situation where I absolutely couldn’t workout (I was injured), but I just had to lose weight!
